Pebble Seats heading for Surrey Quays.
Tuesday 4th December
Surrey Quays development
The new Surrey Quays development in East London will soon have fourteen polished concrete Pebble Seats installed. The Pebble Seats were specified by HTA London and F M Conway. They are due to be installed week commencing the 10th December close to the canal.
The fourteen Pebble Seats are a mix of the asymmetric extra large Pendeens and the smaller oval Picos. Contractor F M Conway contacted us after being left without the seating originally specified for the project very late in the day, and HTA supported their recommendation to use the Barrell Pebble Seats on this major project.
Barrell Sculpture generally make Pebble Seats to order. With three colours, three finishes and seven different shapes and sizes the choice for clients is quite broad. As each Pebble Seat is cast and finished by hand in Barrell Sculpture’s workshop we tend not to keep a big stock but we usually have some. In this case, we were delighted to be able to be able to supply the project with what they needed at very short notice.
Polished concrete Pebble Seats
These seats are the original highly polished solid cast concrete option in mid-grey. The concrete mix has been developed by Ben Barrell over twenty years of working with the material, and the polished finish honed to a high gloss surface that gleams even on the darkest day. When the Pebble Seats are sent out to clients they are very carefully wrapped in layers of carpet and protective wrap, and secured to a pallet to protect the shine and the concrete. Although concrete is a very strong material the hardening off process continues for a long time after it is cast and set, and when they are new, they need to be handled with care. The individual wrapped pallets are placed on to the curtainsider with a forklift, and go off to their new home.
